I am just starting my adwords account and beginning my first campaings. It does not seem to difficult, but there are a lot of tips and tricks. I am thinking of attending the adwords 101 and 201 and then possibly the 301 etc. Has anyone been to these to know if they are worth the money. I have seen a lot of videos and there are a lot of groups out there. I am just trying to find the right blend for money and time. BTW, the online info is ok, but I know personally I learn better when I can stop and instructor and have them explain something more in detail. Just the kind of learner I am…. so with that in mind, any ideas?
I’ve been to one of them, and to be honest, you could easily by 2 or 3 leading books and get the same info for $50. Some people convince themselves that a classroom or lecture setting is somehow superior, and if you need to learn that way, then go for it. But the info is the same whether from a book or from a presenter re-hashing book info.

Google Adwords is far and away the most popular PPC advertising platform on the internet. The reasons for this are simple: a well designed user interface, a large number and variety of publishers to show the ads and, most importantly, a long history of positive ROI rates for advertisers. Adwords can be intimidating to new users, but it really isn’t very difficult to learn the skills you need to get started.
This article is meant to be a basic introduction to Adwords. So if you are already very familiar with it, this might be review. The first problem most people have with Adwords is setting to and sticking with a budget. Most people get frustrated because they haven’t bid enough for their clicks, resulting in their ads having a low position. After a couple days of poor results, most new advertisers quickly increase their bids and the results is a pile of expensive traffic that brings back little, if any, return. When you make your adwords account, set a small budget. Use keyword tools (many of which are available on the links page of this website) to determine which searches are most popular and try to find searches that other advertisers haven’t thought of. This is the best way of getting cheap traffic to your website(s), since less competition means lower cost per click.
However, cheap traffic is not necessarily good traffic. Let me repeat that again, just because you are getting cheap clicks from Adwords does not mean you are using your advertising dollars effectively. Targeted traffic is the key. If your website is selling software tutorials and you bid on phrases such as “free software” or “download photoshop” you might very well get many, many visitors (very inexpensively), but I can guarantee that your conversion rate (sales/visitor) will be horrible. Even key phrases like “free tutorials” will fail to create a positive return. Generally, never use the word “free” in your ads, unless you are actually giving something away for free. Users will click, costing you money, but are almost never interested in shelling out cash for a product.
Conversely, using key phrases with the words “buy” or “purchase” will decrease the number of clicks you receive, but will certainly increase your conversion rate and ROI. Going back to my previous example, bidding on key phrases such as “buy dreamweaver tutorials”or “professional photoshop tutorials” will give you visitors that are interested in buying the product you are selling and willing to spend money if your product matches their needs. How can Yahoo Search Marketing compete with Google Adwords in PPC Advertising, effectively?…?
What are the reasons why Yahoo, despite its initial headstart (Go2.com, Overture, etc.) over Google in PPC advertising, is not anywhere close to Google Adwords in either market share for itself, or gain ‘win-win relationship image’ in terms of customer perception?
Can Yahoo do anything to bridge the gap, and even overtake Google in PPC advertising? How?
This is just to clarify based on the first response below. I’m not sure if it is purely a matter of personal preference.
Advertising is a business market, where only results would count, unlike consumer markets. When it comes to money making, the market is very efficient and ruthless.
Besides, advertisers don’t have to choose one of them over the other, as they could use both, if both would produce results for them.
Are there specific features and benefits of Google’s over Yahoo’s that advertisers prefer? For example, Bid policies, minimum bid rates, conversions to sales, terms of use, etc.?

I’m not so sure that Yahoo really pushed itself as a search specialist early on. When I first heard of Yahoo a little over 10 years back, it was for two reasons, neither of which was search.
One was people getting @yahoo.com email accounts. The other was the finance message boards. Some people at work were using the message boards as a way to anonymously vent some steam about work, whether they were really interested in the company’s stock or not.
Google really was known for search, first and foremost from the beginning. As the other answerer said, some people use google as a verb. The word yahoo just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, when used the same way.
I have used them both a lot, and I’ve never felt that either was better than the other. The results are usually very, very similar. What few differences there are, usually don’t make one any better than the other.
I have had people tell me that Google was a lot better than Yahoo, but have not been able to give me a concrete example of doing the same search on Yahoo as on Google and said how Google was better. It is a perception but it is a very strong perception.
If nothing catastrophic happens to Google, I doubt that Yahoo will close the gap any time soon. But with PPC revenues increasing as fast as they are, even if Yahoo continues to lose just a percent or two of market share a year, Yahoo should continue to be a player.
